In many workplaces, the roles of manager and mentor are often confused. While both can support professional growth, they serve different purposes. Understanding this difference can help millennials and Gen Z professionals build healthier expectations and stronger career development strategies.

A manager is typically responsible for performance, productivity, deadlines, and business outcomes. Their role is to ensure that work is completed effectively and that team objectives are met. A mentor, however, offers a different kind of support. Mentorship is often centred around long term personal and professional development. For millennials, this distinction may resonate with experiences of navigating competitive workplaces while searching for meaningful career progression. Gen Z professionals, many of whom value transparency and personal growth, are also recognising the importance of building supportive professional relationships outside formal reporting structures.

This does not mean managers cannot become mentors. In some cases, they naturally provide both leadership and personal guidance. However, expecting every manager to fulfil a mentorship role can lead to disappointment or unrealistic expectations.

Seeking advice from colleagues, industry professionals, and trusted connections can provide perspectives that go beyond the workplace hierarchy. Professional growth is rarely shaped by one person alone, but rather through a combination of experiences, relationships, and continuous learning.
